Do What Makes You Happy
TED Talk #3 |
As we grow up we dream of the jobs we would love to have once we get out of school. Then when we are grown up our dreams that we have had might not be the realistic image we are living in. In the video, The Way We Think Our Work Is Broken, Barry Schwartz shares with viewers the topic question of why we work. Most would simply answer and say they work for money, but others have a deeper meaning to their jobs. Yes, everyone considerable works for money but the idea of where that money is going to or how it is used is starting to become a reason to question your job. Now if having a job just to earn money why not pick a job that you actually will enjoy, that will have meaning to your life. Work that challenges you and pushes you to the best of your abilities. Most workers for their pay because of “ideas of technology”. This is basically a wave of understanding ourselves. No one wants to do work that is demeaning of themselves so why should we? In class we have been reading the play Death of a Salesmen and the book Working in the Shadows. Both of these books show us that work has a meaning hidden behind it. All the places that Gabriel Thompson travels to when seeking work with immigrants has had meaning to at least one of the workings. At the Dole lettuce farm, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers working hour’s among hours in the day just to earn enough money to put food on the table and help stabilize their families. Many of the workers even enjoyed the job cutting lettuce because it’s some of the best jobs they have been at. In Death of a Salesmen, Willy Loman, was one of the most well-known salesmen when he was younger and he loved what he did. Loving your job creates a better outcome of who you are as a person and even if you love your job yet bust barley making payments on bills its better than having a job that doesn’t mean anything to you. You should always strive for what your dreams are even if it is not a lot, you cannot push your dreams aside you’ll get their eventually weather it takes you two weeks or till the time you’re 86, always work for something that makes you happy.
